Vintage handwoven Guatemalan huipil from Chichicastenango features 6 individual panels on each side with a dense multicolor zig zag pattern and embroidered appliqué details. Includes the sunburst velvet neckline that best distinguishes huipiles from this region.
Something to note: There is evidence throughout this garment that it has been repurposed. Normally, huipiles have 1 - 3 individual panels per side, this piece has 6. The lower half is a slightly brighter shade of reddish pink & a line of demarcation is visible near the sleeve where the original seam was likely placed (appears darker since that area wan't exposed. See photo 5). All appliqués are slightly off center and side seams are a little bulky due to Ikat piping detail. Also, seam stitching on one side ends 5 inches above the hemline. See photo 10. The textile itself is in amazing condition and has a good weight to it. A single thick thread holds the sides together...if can easily be removed if you prefer to wear this piece as an open poncho. :)
