David McCullough's acclaimed biography covers a broad stretch of President Harry S. Truman's life, from his childhood, to his ascendance in the U.S. senate, and of course, to his years as president where the work offers a mostly positive perspective on Truman's political and wartime decisions. It is also so comprehensive that it took McCullough a decade to finish. Yet his research and impeccable prose earned him the Pulitzer Prize in Biography, an award he won again in 2002 for his biography on John Adams. These works and many others rightly place McCullough among the best non-fiction authors of the last 100 years. Moreover, Truman is an important work beyond its value as presidential history and commentary, because it proves McCullough an authority on presidential history and writing in general.
