The evergreen Durian is often called the king best of fruits and is trending all over the world.
Especially in Thailand Durians are very popular and there are over 300 varieties. However, due to the strong odor that Durians emit, they are banned from many public facilities, esp. hotels and public transportation. The fruits are enjoyed by most people - the flavor is often described as vanilla custard with hints of onion.
'Petruk' is a cultivar native to Java, Indonesia that produces elongated fruits that are covered in sharp spikes and can range from yellow to green in color. The pulp is yellow and creamy, with a consistency often compared to yogurt.
The pulp is sweet and also has citrus notes that the 'Petruk' is famous for.
The fruit is usually eaten fresh but the seeds can also be boiled or roasted. The fruits are rich in potassium, iron, folate and fibre.
Young trees require some shade for the first years while older trees also grow well in locations with full sun. The trees can be grown outside in zones 10 - 12. In areas where the average low of the coldest month is below 59°F, flower and fruit production will suffer. The flowers are bisexual, plants usually come into production after 7 years.
